Tribeca

Map of Neighborhood Local Schools
The name, adopted in the mid 1970’s, is an acronym for the TRIangle BElow CAnal street. In 1705, Queen Anne granted this area, which until that time had been part of what was called the Queen’s farm (later King’s farm), to Trinity Church. Recognizing the city was moving northward, the church cannily developed much of its property in a grid street pattern, one of the first seen in Manhattan and set about building row houses. In the early 19th century commerce found its way to TriBeCa, and merchants put up capacious loft buildings.
