Soho/ Noho

Map of Neighborhood Local Schools
SoHo, the acronym SOuth of HOuston (street), a moniker adopted in the 1960s. Farmland until the early 19th century, this section underwent transformation to booming prosperity and growth, following newly opened north-south arteries up the middle of the island. By the first quarter of the 19th century, exclusives shops and elegant homes had installed themselves in these environs. In the 1960s and 1970s artists needing cheap open spaces moved in, spurring an evolution that would soon be repeated in TriBeCa. NoHo, similarly taking its name from its position NOrth of HOuston (street) is a recent addition to the pantheon of trendy neighborhoods names. Like NoLIta to its east and SoHo to its south NoHo’s commercial palaces uprooted an earlier milieu of patrician gentility. Now home to the Public Theatre, Washington Square and New York University.
