Hells Kitchen

Map of Neighborhood Local Schools
Crossing 8th Avenue from the east in the 50s a subtle change of atmosphere becomes apparent as the flashy bright lights of Times Square give way to residential blocks with neighborhood stores and corner restaurants. Clinton has left behind its past as a 19th-century industrial blot, shedding the usual welter of abattoirs, fright yards, piers, and coal yards. Prior to 1959, Clinton was called Hell’s Kitchen renamed the neighborhood in an effort to spiff up its reputation. De Witt Clinton, 1769 – 1828, was a several-time mayor of the city, governor of the state, and force behind the construction of the Erie Canal.
