Greenwich Village

Map of Neighborhood Local Schools
In the 18th century Greenwich (the “Village” was added later), was a summer retreat for businessmen and their families seeking relief from the hubbub and heat of the bustling city several miles to the south. Development accelerated as epidemics of cholera and yellow fever in the late 18th and early 19th centuries drove many downtown residents and businesses to seek healthier surroundings in the village. Due to residents’ efforts to protect and retain it, the irregular street layout survived the 1811 Commissioners’ grid plan which divided Manhattan into marketable lots up to 155th street. It is usually assumed to have been named by a large land holder, Sir Peter Warren, after a borough in London through which the prime meridian runs. However, the name is said to have predated Warren’s arrival and to have been associated with a Dutch farm area called Greenwjck, meaning green inlet or cove.
