East Village |
|
The boundaries of the East Village coincide roughly with the farms, or “bowerji”, owned in the latter part of the 17th century by Peter Stuyvesant, the last Dutch governor of New Netherland. In the early 19th century, affluent citizenry made their homes in Federal-style row houses, some of which still bear testimony to a gracious past in the streets around St. Marks Church in the Bowery. The neighborhood earned its “village” title in the mid 20th century as high rents and gentrification squeezed artists, musicians and intellectuals east from Greenwich Village.
