A planned enclave, in the mid 18th century, captain Thomas Clarke acquired much of the acreage west of 8th Avenue from about 20th to 28th Streets and named it to recall London’s bucolic Chelsea Royal Hospital. Inheriting and adding to the property in 1813, Clement Clarke Moore entered the development stake sin progress to the east and went so far as to dictate building styles and materials to the buyers of his lots. Now home to the sports complex, Chelsea Piers, the old something building now the Chelsea Market and the trendy Meat Packing District.
